A vast swamp, the Marshlands are completely covered in shallow water, with no dry land to be found. The depth of the water varies, but is always at least ankle deep. Deeper areas can be as much as 50 meters. Vegetation size and thickness varies significantly as well, ranging from trees taller than monsters to simple clumps of floating aquatic plants. Open channels and “lakes” are common as well. These variations in vegetation are highly localized and occur all through the region, meaning it can’t be divided into subtypes like some of the other regions. A single battle can easily go from a cluster of huge trees, to an open channel, to knee-high shrub. Densely treed areas are particularly spotty, with tree “islands” a mile or so wide scattered around the region.
The region has several hazards that can easily catch monsters off-guard. First of all, the water depth can drop off suddenly and with virtually no warning. A monster can be trudging through knee deep water and stumble into a hole 40 meters deep. Areas of deep, sticky muck are not uncommon, and can severely hinder movement. Furthermore, monsters can quickly find themselves completely trapped in this muck should they stay still too long, leaving them wide open to attack. Lastly, and most dangerously, battling monsters will often destabilize and churn up the substrate, releasing trapped methane. This colorless and odorless gas is harmless in and of itself, but it’s highly flammable. Should any sort of incendiary, be it a heat beam, a flamethrower, any sort of explosive, or even a firing gun or activated thruster, come in contact with a large-scale methane release, the result will be a fireball which could easily engulf both fighters.
