Name: Orion
Height: 100 meters
Mass: 80,000 tons
Description:
The GMX-78-2 Orion is a humanoid mecha which looks similar to the ARX-7 Arbalest in general shape and proportions. The top of the head is a flattened dome, with a sunken-in face and overhanging visor, making it look somewhat like it’s wearing a motorcycle helmet without the visor or the part that covers the mouth/chin (alternatively, think a Gundam’s head with a “brow” that protrudes farther than usual and without the various crests). The arms are rather unremarkable, with small armored “elbow guards” that jut backwards from the forearms (see Arbalest pic). Its “shoulder pads” have octagonal bases where they attach to the shoulder, with triangular armor plates extending out to the sides. The legs are similarly unremarkable to the arms, with armored knee guards coming up from the lower legs. They have a defined “calf muscle” as well as an armor plate around the front and back of each ankle. The feet are divided into a front and heel section. The torso is particularly solid-looking, with no visible vents or openings between armor plates. On its hips are short armor plates which hang down to protect the joints (two in front, one on each side, and one large one in the rear). These look similar to those on Heavyarms Custom. On each of these plates is at least one rectangular compartment which holds extra magazines and shells. The mech’s coloration is primarily white. The shoulders and hand armor, as well as sections of the head, chest, and forearms are Navy blue. The bottom sections of the feet, and a few bits scattered across the mech are black. Its eyes are green. All of its guns are dark gray, while the Monomolecular Blades are matte black.
A particularly interesting aspect of Orion is the way its piloted. It’s called a semi-master-slave operating system. Put simply, the pilot controls the machine primarily with his own body instead of buttons and switches. While he remains strapped into a seat like in any other mech, his appendages are all placed in armatures which trace his movements. Because of the limited space provided by the cockpit, the movement ratio is not 1:1, hence the “semi-”. A small movement on the part of the pilot will translate to a considerably larger movement by the machine. As an added benefit, this allows it to perform feats of agility that would be impossible for a human to pull off.
Personality:
Kevin Anew pilots Orion, and as such the machine effectively has the same personality as he does.
Attacks:
- SAR–03 Assault Rifle: Looks like an XM8. This assault rifle is Orion’s primary weapon. It has three settings: single shot, burst mode, and fully automatic. Single shot is self explanatory. Burst mode fires three rounds per trigger pull. Fully automatic is again self explanatory, firing at a rate of 750 rounds per minute. Can be attached magnetically to the back of either shoulder. Magazines hold 30 rounds.
- XDEW-25 Plasma Rifle: Looks similar to this, but the three prongs are thicker, and the upper two are turned so that they look like this when viewed from the front. This gun fires searing (~50,000° F) blasts of yellow plasma. These blasts aren’t “solid” in appearance like most energy weapons, instead appearing more like a thick cloud of glowing gas or mist that crackles with electricity. Can be attached magnetically to the back of either shoulder.
- AMSR-10 Sniper Rifle: Basically an enlarged Barrett M107. Oversized even in comparison to the mech, it’s 80 meters long in total. It can be attached diagonally across Orion’s back for storage. As one would guess, its range is tremendous, being able to nail a monster from anywhere within visual range (approximately 23 miles, at which point the target is beyond the horizon) without the aid of computer calculations and GPS coordinates. It is arguably Orion’s most powerful weapon, able to take down weaker monsters with a single well-placed shot. Add onto that the fact that it’s semi-automatic and can fire its entire 10-round magazine in as many seconds, and it’s easy to see why this weapon is so incredibly potent. Obviously it’s intended for long range combat, and its close range effectiveness is limited because it’s so unwieldy.
- MSG-07 Shotcannon: Looks like a Mossberg 590A1. An utterly devastating weapon at short-range, this 12-gauge equivalent, pump action shotgun can blow holes in practically anything. Being a shotgun, its effective range is obviously quite limited, but its stopping power within that range is incredible. It has an 8-round internal magazine, plus one more in the chamber for a total of 9 rounds. An additional 6 rounds can be stored in holders along the side of the gun, like so. It’s usually loaded with the scaled equivalent of buckshot, but Frag-12 grenades and non-lethal bean bag rounds can also be used. An adaptation of the SCMITR round has been developed as well. Can be attached magnetically to the back of either shoulder.
- M161 Vulcans: Primarily defensive weapons mounted in either side of the head. They each spew 6000 rounds per minute, but the effective range is limited and they aren’t terribly accurate.
- Monomolecular Blades: Orion has a large blade stored horizontally on its rear armor plate. This blade is 40 meters long in total, 32 of which is the blade itself. Additionally, it has a 16-meter combat knife (based on the KA-BAR model 1211) stored in a sheath on each hip. The knives can be attached magnetically to a retractable wire on the underside of either wrist for throwing and retrieval. As the name suggests, the leading edges of all three of these blades are sharpened to only a single molecule thick, meaning they are extremely potent cutting weapons.
Powers:
- Semi-Master-Slave OS: As already mentioned, Orion’s operating system allows it to perform feats of agility that no human could ever achieve.
- Ammo: Orion can store extra magazines for both its assault and sniper rifles and extra shells for the shotcannon on its hip armor plates.
- Wrist Wires: On the undersides of its wrists, Orion has retractable wires tipped with powerful electromagnets. These are primarily used to allow it to throw and retrieve its Bowie knives, but can also be used to retrieve its other weapons (or any other metal object, for that matter) that are out of reach. They’re strong enough to support the mech’s entire weight and then some.
- Vision Modes: Orion can switch between normal, night vision, and infrared vision modes.
- Shielding: Orion’s circuits are heavily shielded from electromagnetism and other such things that would normally fry sensitive electronics.
Weakness: Orion can only carry so much ammunition, and what it does have it can go through very quickly. Set to full-auto, the assault rifle’s 30-round magazine will last all of 2 and a half seconds. The Shotcannon’s 9 rounds can be fired off in as many seconds. The Sniper Rifle can fire just as quickly, but is overall somewhat less affected by this because of its limited usefulness. Even the one gun it has that isn’t restricted by ammunition, the Plasma Rifle (it has a compact internal generator), can overheat and shut down if it’s overused.
