Leaning back into his seat, Selstar smiled as he watched Abaddon stomp out the doors of its hanger on a huge, billboard sized view screen. The machine’s glitch had been sorted out after careful analysis of its nethereal energy core. Building such a core had always been a risky endeavor at best… nethereal energy wasn’t known for its corrupting abilities for nothing. The UCA had kindly implemented a shield around the core, designed block the energy from the machine’s computers. Future “personality disorders” would be highly unlikely.
And, if his day couldn’t get any better, he learned that the infamous Kadru had been captured and imprisoned by the UCA, far from the underworld. No more guerrilla attacks. No more small-scale rebellions. Once Abaddon’s testing was completed and they returned to the underworld, life would become much easier for him.
As he reached for his drink, he heard the booming voice of the UCA’s announcer crackle to life from the overhead speakers. He listened as the destruction of Orsa was announced far and wide across the hub, sipping his drink in satisfaction.
Good. Another thorn in the side removed.
Finding himself curious as to the identity of Orsa’s killers, Selstar fumbled with the controls of his view screen until the ruins of what was once a large city flickered into view. He was just in time to see the four horsemen vanishing into the sky. Beneath them stood a large group of monsters, wounded, exhausted, but standing tall and victorious despite their struggle. A bird-like monster was already disappearing into the hub, having completely ignored the horsemen’s presence. Among the remaining heroes stood a shadowy dragon, a serpent, and a bird slumped across the back of…
He gasped, spraying his drink from his mouth and across the control panel. His glass slipped from his hand, shattering on the hard floor below. It couldn’t be…
With trembling fingers, he reached for the controls, zooming the picture in on the stone goliath standing amongst the heroes. It felt as though his heart was trying to burst from his chest, as the monster’s onscreen image grew larger. A small whimper escaped his lips.
They were here. The very beings that had destroyed his home world though their bitter conflict. The same titans that had once ruled over his people and the three kingdoms. The deities that the Ophorus had once sworn to serve so many eons ago. Unstoppable forces of nature that had followed them right into the depths of Old Hell and brought about its destruction.
The False Gods.
If they were here, he was not safe. Could the UCA control the short-tempered God of the Earth? There had been deaths at the UCA before. Ex Eleking, Gwangi, very nearly Fenris – to say nothing of the casualties caused by the Orsa crisis. Behemoth could hold a grudge, like no other, and his wrath was infamous. What if the stone god wanted he and Kadru dead? Was that why he had arrived on this planet?
But the God of the Earth was the least of his concerns. A chill rolled up his spine as Selstar considered the possibilities of Leviathan arriving to the UCA. Although behemoth’s motives were ambiguous to him, it was painfully obvious that the God of the Sea sought the destruction of every last member of his race. It was he that had tracked them into Old Hell, wiping out every Ophorus and their demonic descendants in his path. Only the arrival of Behemoth had spared the destruction of the rest of the underworld, as the serpent fled outmatched, and out of his element.
One False God was in the UCA. And it was only a matter of time before the other two arrived, if they were not here already. Selstar didn’t trust the UCA to keep him safe. It was time to take matters into his own hands.
He immediately reached for Abaddon’s control box.
