Name: Field Commander Samantha Athina Harwell (AKA Sam)
Height: 5'4''
Mass: 138 lbs
Age: Early 30's
Description: Sam is a short, terribly serious blonde woman with surprising broad shoulders and a near permanent scowl. Though it is somewhat hidden by the tan-and-navy GAAF uniform that she wears at most times, she is quite muscular- not by natural gift, but instead the hours of intensive exercise and combat training that she puts herself through every day. Her shoulder length hair is often tied back in a neat bun to keep it out of the way. She has a rounded face with full lips and subdued cheekbones and chin. Her hard eyes are a stunning amber color and there is a reddish port-wine stain birthmark bleeding into her right eyebrow. A thick band of dark freckles crosses the bridge of her nose, a feature she has never liked about herself and thinks would look better on some ridiculous fantasy elf character than a military woman.
Personality: Sam is extremely stern and inflexible, though not without good reason. She comes from a long line of military men and women and has followed her family legacy into the second place seat of power in the West GAAF. Even after being so far removed from her desk job and field position there in the GAAF, she still holds her discipline close, conducting herself as if she were still under the watch of her superior officer- not because she has to, but because it is what she knows best and, like Alex Shepherd's jabbing humor or Oscar Wilson's self deprecation, what will best guard her against total breakdown in the alien environment of the UCA. Though straight faced and serious, Sam is not necessarily unfriendly- closer to “on guard.” Sam distrusts everyone she meets. It is not impossible to befriend her, but it is a challenge. The only easy companions she has made at the UCA are the two that she already knows- Alex and Oscar- and even they can be target for her displeasure when their ribbing goes too far. Sam is more open minded to the idea of monsters being intelligent and sociable creatures than Oscar, but does not believe in this ideal as strongly as Alex. She is suspicious of all giant creatures in the same way that she is suspicious of all human-sized ones and, in that was, is fair in her unfairness and allows her trust to be won by anyone or anything provided that they are genuine in their efforts. Beneath her cold exterior, Sam is fiercely protective. She is at her harshest when she is ensuring the safety of both those close to her and the unknown masses she is charged with protecting. Sam values human life more than anything and the lives of valuable monsters distantly after that. She is particular protective- and thus cruelest to- Alex, as she does not believe him capable of looking after himself. Their relationship is one marked mostly by disagreement and bickering, but is ultimately based on honest concern and affection for one another.
History: Sam was, by chance, nearby when the serpent Quetzar rose from the Central American jungle and was part of the military convoy that picked up Alex Shepherd, who had witnessed firsthand and, in fact, initiated the event. In the two month and eight monster incursions that followed, the two became core pieces of the GAAF due to their military and biological knowledge respectively.
For the competence and intelligence she showed dealing with threats like Fainis and Strider, Sam was awarded with the position of WGAAF Field Commander, a role that gave her direct control of all the deployed forces and field resources of the West GAAF and placed her directly below Commandeer-General Nathaniel Teach in the line of command. Despite an enormous age gag, the two worked well together and became good friends. Teach was quickly assured that he had picked a fine successor upon seeing Sam's dedicated, efficient work and Sam sought and valued his approval as a mentor figure.
There was tension between Sam and Oscar when he first joined the WGAAF due to his previous career as an outlaw and vigilante, due the two have similar values and morals and quickly learned to put aside their differences, even becoming friends before two long. The big Scottish pilot could still make a nuisance of himself by disobeying orders and playing pranks with Alex though.
Living Quarters: The quarters provided for Sam sit somewhere between modest bedroom and military gym. It is a place she considers deeply private, off limits to everyone but herself and a few close personal friends, and it is evenly split between a plain bed and nightstand and a practical playground of exercise equipment. The two halves blend flawlessly into each other.
Monsters and characters associated with: Sam is, in the most basic terms, the boss of both Alex and Oscar. She has never impressed this relationship upon them outside of military situations though. In fact, she is much more likely to object to their antics out of personal irritation rather than ranking. Charged with the direction of all GAAF ground forces, Sam has waged war against Kedos, Fainis, Rustred, Arc, and Pouh-Wung, directly controlled the deployment of Ranger, and knows of Plume, Photon, Drakia, and the Sub-Titan through alliances both temporary and long standing. Sam can also consider Quetzar an ally, though she is wary of the serpent after watching him burn landscapes to the group in moments of anger. She is not afraid to voice her doubts about him either. The two have a tense relationship, though they realize that their personal ire must be put aside when serious trouble brews.
