"Let me guess... they took your parents, the children, everyone that was there, and killed them... and that was when your special DNA kicked in, to save your own skin." Mara said, her voice grave, and with a hint of sorrow and shock in it. She knew all too well the horrors of war. She had been one of Persephone's elite commanders after all, and the Human-Demon war that had lasted three long years had seen brutality and gore which now made her sick to her stomach... The sight of countless families and homes, layed to waste and torn apart by the hordes of Gyu-Oni, Tyralus gorging himself off a bleeding pile of human bodies, many of them still alive and screaming, the boar heads stripping them to the bone before devouring them, the putrid stench of charred and burning corpses littering the landscape for miles... Now that she was in her right mind, it shook her to the core.

Though Alex held his tongue... he shared the same suspicions as Mara, but was waiting for their confirmation before saying anything... his tightened his jaw and he suddenly felt thankful that he had missed the closet thing to the atrocities that Vesica had experienced. The Titorous Incident. A futile seven-day war against the first modern Aberration that took place thirty-five years before he was born. No matter how many bullets, bombs, and soldiers had been thrown against it, the merciless beast of scales and bone had simply kept advancing, cutting a straight line through the Asian continent and trampling anything- and anyone- in its path. As further insult, the first strike to phase it was was not made by man, but another monster. A pair of them in fact. The late parents of Drakia, a former resident of the UCA turned into a living horror show. The mated monsters had cast all their might against the towering Titorous as one and actually managed to stagger him, the first sign of weakness shown by the silent brute since he had risen from the sea and marched upon land. Then a second blow was dealt against the ancient terror, this time by men. A nuclear blow. A mushroom cloud engulfed the trio of tangling titans, but only one emerged alive. Missing an arm and seeping blood from a gaping wound in its chest, Titorous had swept aside the curtain of fire and debris to step forward and detonate him, enlarging the molten core of his body until it erupted and created an explosive even larger than the one that had rocked him moments before. Only five hundred of the thousands and thousands of men deployed against the soulless thing had survived.
To this day, Titorous was still considered the most feared being in the history of his world, unsurpassed by even the legions of monsters that Alex made a living by studying.

Raising her head in slight shock at the bluntness of Mara's words, Vesica opened her mouth to speak, then decided against it, averting her gaze again. "I guess you could say that."
She trailed off for a moment, tugging at her sleeve. "We were taken from our home. I don't know what happened to my parents. It's not something I like to think about. My brother and I were separated from them and taken to Drancy internment camp. I never saw them again."
Vesica was silent for a moment.
"It was just my older brother looking after me for a while. We were given no food, not for days. Then... then we were crammed into a train and deported to another camp. When we arrived they forced us into separate lines..." She was finding it difficult to speak now, as though her throat had squeezed shut. Vesica inhaled only a shallow breath, and then struggled for another.
"I can't..."

"Don't press yourself to go on if you can't" Mara said, placing her hand on Vesica's back. She placed her head on the girl's shoulder. "Human beings can be either the best of beings, or the worst of beings, especially in war. I wish I could help ease the pain... I wish I could..."

"I'm sorry," Alex muttered after a moment of stunned muteness. "I really am."
He wished he could do more, but words were all he had to offer. Tragedy had not touched his life like it the two women.

Although she knew Mara was trying to comfort her, Vesica edged away under her touch. "I'm okay," she tried to protest as soon as she could speak again. "You guys need to know… why I lied to you." For the first time in a while, her head rose to meet their eyes. "Why I ran… why I hid from you, for so long."
She forced in a deep breath. "I woke up in a chamber," she whispered, and her eyes drifted back to the floor. "I could smell some sort of gas. Then I realize I was surrounded by b-bodies." Vesica shuddered at the memory, eyes squeezing shut. "I didn't realize I had changed until later. When I noticed my hair."
Vesica was rubbing her wrist again. "And they noticed too. They realized I was alive. And so..."
She swallowed.
"They… experimented on me. Tortured me. For four years. And when the war had ended… when the camp was liberated…"
Her voice had changed. Her words were quivering in both grief and helpless, futile rage.
"I thought I was free. I thought I had been saved. But then the liberators found the documents. They found out what I was. They continued the 'research' that had been started." She was shaking again, but this time not out of fear. Her fists tightened into balls. "All I've ever been met with is fear, and hate, and pain," she spat. "Because I was different from others. Because people thought I was a monster. I learned couldn't trust anyone."

"Human beings can be like that. They fear their own species so much, they will turn on anything that they deem a threat for their own survival." Mara said, noting Vesica's edging away from her. "Even then, no one deserves to be treated like that, to be experimented on for years without no end... It's a horrible thing to go through. Crigan especially knows how that is. He suffered that for 500 years."

"Hatred is a potent force," Alex said grimly. "But fear is even worse. And we tend to fear what's different."
He lowered his eyes and utter a quiet, "Sorry," as if apologizing for the whole human race.

Vesica was silent for a moment, but soon returned her gaze to the others. "I guess that's enough depressing stories for one day…"
She struggled to rise from the couch, the strength slowly returning to her.
"Right now, my main concern is food. Cafe, anyone?"

Alex smiled, although he did not quite seem happy. "Sounds good to me," he said, offering a hand to help Vesica up as he did.

Mara couldnt't help but nod as her stomach growled abit. She didn't realize she was hungry until Vesica brought up food. "Yeah... some food is always good."
It was at that moment that the door opened, and in stepped Shikieiki, the short Judge of the Dead sighing as she closed the door behind her. "Well, Proteus has been dropped off at his room, so-" She stopped, seeing Vesica was wide awake, and now starring back at her. "It seems out guest has come to. Pardon the rude interruption. The name is Shikieiki Yamaxanadu, the Judge of the Dead that Mara's husband works for. You could say I am a friend."

"A friend?" Vesica slumped against Alex's shoulder as her legs trembled for a moment, but her skeptical eyes never left the Yama. "I've never met you in my life."
As her legs began to work again, she kicked Alex's foot a light kick, urging them to move away from the newcomer.

Suppressing a yelp of surprise as he was kicked, Alex took a few- what he hoped were- inconspicuous steps back from the Judge of the Dead under the guise of giving her more room to step in.
Though he said nothing, too busy supporting Vesica as he hobbled backwards, Alex grumbled inwardly. She was almost as untrusting as Sam...
His stomach then grumbled outwardly, causing the human to make an apologetic face and mumble an excuse.
"Oh, uh... sorry. Been a while since I ate while all the craziness that's happen in the last few hours."

Seeing as the situation was becoming quite tense with the Yama's appearance, Mara stepped in to defuse it. "She meant to say a friend of a friend... My husband Crigan works for her." Mara was quick to say, restating what the Yama had said. "You can trust her. She means no harm."
"Indeed I don't." SHikieiki stated, a bit of annoyance in her eyes. "I know most people don't exactly like those who judge them in the afterlife, but atleast give me the benefit of a doubt. I am not one to judge you, though... unless you have perfomed some horrible sins in your life, but that can wait for a further inquiry." She look close note of Vesica's face, the stress the girl seemed to be under, as well as her paranoia. While she was indeed some source of it, she could tell there was more to it than just fear of her. "I guess I will have to ask Mara the details later. I do apologize for my sudden intrusion."

"It's no problem," smiled Alex easily. While he was not the most socially adept person, attempting to calm potentially standoffish situations had become second nature to him after he began working with Sam. She was good at her job, but her take-charge style of operation tended to make more enemies than friends. "Not your fault that you caught us at a... less than favorable time. I think we're all a bit frayed at the moment. Some of us more than others and for better reasons..."
He shuffled uncomfortably as he murmured the last part. Alex felt a bit out of place after hearing the things Mara and Vesica had gone through, though he scolded himself for drawing attention to it. The last thing he needed to do was act as if he were the victim here.
