Too busy recovering from the previous assault to notice Riptide charging the ANECs, Kevin can’t avoid the attack and his mech gets blasted a moment later.
He growls. “Okay, I’m getting really tired of that.”
Kevin springs his mech out of the crater, not bothering to even check if Riptide is actually attempting a follow-up attack. The move proves to be a wise one, as a volley of missiles strike the spot where Orion had been laying just a moment before. Upon landing, Orion pumps its Shotcannon and fires, the pellets peppering Riptide’s chest.
“Well, that’s finally emptied. Now I can move on to the fun stuff.”
With that, Orion pulls back the pump to eject the spent shell. However, instead of immediately pushing it forward again to seal the chamber, Orion first grabs a shell off of its hip armor and loads it into the chamber, then seals it. Quickly rolling out of the way of a shot from Riptide’s Super NOVA, Orion aims and fires. This time, instead of a group of small pellets smashing into his armor, Ben is shocked when he finds a tightly-grouped set of eight blades embedded in Riptide’s upper chest.
“What was that?”
“SCMITR round. Gnarly little bugger, huh?”
Before Ben can respond, Kevin reaches down and grabs the knife off Orion’s left hip, attaches it to the wire under its wrist, and throws it at Riptide. The blade buries itself in Riptide’s right pectoral area before Kevin quickly retracts the wire and rips the knife back out. Ben prepares to fire the Super NOVA, but Orion flings out its other wrist wire, its magnetic tip attaching just above Riptide’s foot. Just as Riptide fires, Orion yanks back on the wire, pulling Riptide’s leg out from under it and making the Super NOVA swing in a wide arc across the sky as the machine falls backwards. Kevin detaches and retracts the wire as his mech rushes forward, grabbing the knife off its right hip and continuing forward with the intent of burying them both in the prone Riptide.

*Note: the Shotcannon’s magazine is now empty, so from now on a shell will have to be loaded manually before it can be fired.

Ben tried to block with one arm, but the SCIMTR rounds had severed a cable somewhere. While the AI rerouted power and brought backups online, Ben swung the other arm into position and activated the Barrier Field. The Orion's blades slammed into them and bounced off, the sheer force of the impact shorting out the shield. The Orion recoiled, but Kevin rapidly sought to regain control. Unfortunately, a quick blast from the Super NOVA shredded and melted armor on the white mech's chest, knocking the Orion to one knee and giving Ben an opportunity to stand.
"Can't keep taking too much more of this," Ben muttered to himself. "But I don't want to use the Overdrive Cannon. Let's see if we can finish this another way."
Instead of attempting to vaporize the Orion, Ben fired a volley of missiles, widening the gaps in the Orion's armor. Fragments of metal and ceramic composite littered the battlefield, and were soon joined by more of the same as Kevin squeezed off a few shots from the assault rifle, peppering Riptide's frame with more holes. Although Riptide jerked back from the impacts, but quickly swept the ANECs across the Orion, melting more armor to slag.
"You are just a beam-spamming kinda guy, aren't you," Kevin quipped as he brought the Orion back to a standing position.
"Well, when all you have is a hammer..." Ben replied, as he prepared to fire them again...

Kevin rolls to the side, the beams passing through where his mech had been standing a moment prior. He then grabs the Plasma Rifle off his left shoulder and aims at Riptide.
Ben smirks. “That’s still not go-”
He’s cut off as Orion fires, the crackling blast of plasma striking Riptide square in the face. The visual monitors inside the cockpit go white before suddenly going black.
Now it’s Kevin’s turn to smirk. “You may have that fancy energy-absorbent armor, but I’m guessing it won’t stop your optics from getting temporarily burned out.”
With that, Orion stands up, storing its guns on its shoulders and drawing its Monomolecular Sword before rushing toward its blinded opponent. With a mighty swing powered by both hands, the weapon cleaves a huge gash from one side of Riptide’s torso to the other, just below the green orb on its chest. Riptide retaliates with a volley of missiles, blasting Orion and making it stumble back.
But Orion manages to stay on its feet. Storing the sword and grabbing the Shotcannon off its shoulder, Kevin grabs another shell off his hip and loads it into the gun. He takes aim directly at the fresh opening in his opponent’s armor and fires. The round hits its mark, and Riptide is rocked by a powerful explosion that rips the armor apart even further.
“Did I mention I have grenade rounds too?”
As the CEE mech falls over backwards, smoke pouring from its damaged chest, Orion puts its Shotcannon back on its shoulder and grabs its Assault Rifle once again. Kevin takes aim and prepares to unload the rest of the clip into his opponent, targeting the damaged chest once again.

Ben hits the thrusters and scoots backwards, the bullets stitching holes in the desert as Kevin tries to track him. Ben rolls his machine over and fires the Super NOVA again, which Kevin easily dodges. But the point wasn't to hit Kevin, but rather ot keep him from firing back for a moment. Because, as both sides starting running out of armor to stand up to eahc others assaults, Ben decides thta now is the time to play his trump card.
"Activate the Overdrive Cannon. Let's slag his mech."
"Affirmative. Corona-Eclipse Overdrive Cannon powerup sequence initiated. 30 seconds until full charge is attained."
Ben fires again, this time managing to catch the Orion in the leg. The blast knocks the white mech down to one knee. But Kevin is unwilling to give in so easily, as goes into a roll, firing his assault rifle as he goes. More bullets punch holes into Riptide's frame, but none strike center mass. Another strike from both the ANECs and the Super NOVA to the Orion's chest drives the machine back, leaving smoking craters in Kevin's armor before toppling the Imar mech over.
"Powerup sequence complete. Firing in 5..."
Footlocks slammed into place, anchoring Riptide to the desert floor as the chest panels began to split.
"4..."
A blinding white glow built inside Riptide's chest as the cannon array moved forward. Kevin saw what was coming and tried to move, but his machine didn't want to respond.
"3..."
Electricity surges from several points as the white glow builds to a climax. Ben braced himself as the countdown finished out.
"2...1..."
"FIRE!"
The glow exploded outwards in a massive beam of thermonuclear devastation, which streaked right at the Orion. Armor plating is warped and twisted by the heat and the sheer force of the beam as Kevin curls his mech into a ball to try and lessen the damage. The beam continues on for a few seconds, glassing the sands around it before finally disappating as Riptide's chest panels close back and the footlocks disengage. Ben is surprised to see the Orion slowly return to a standing position. Its armor has been either stripped away or reduced to molten slag in many places. It still glows white hot where the beam struck.
"Warning. internal reserves at 40%. Missile stocks depleted."
"Guess we better try to put an end to this," Ben said, as he began to charge the Super NOVA once more...

Orion leaps out of the path of the beam, being surprisingly spry after taking such a devastating attack.
“So,” Kevin says through slightly ragged breaths, “you did have one final trick up your sleeve, huh? Good. That tells me I’m pushing you to your limit.”
Rolling out of the way of another Super NOVA, Kevin grabs the Shotcannon off his shoulder and a shell off his hip and loads it into the weapon. Ben, not knowing or caring what surprise the shell will pack, activates Riptide’s Barrier Field as Orion takes aim. A grenade detonates against the shield a moment later, shorting it out and making Riptide stumble back a step from the force of the blast.
As the smoke clears, Ben sees Orion rushing forward with both Monomolecular Knives drawn. He responds quickly, activating the Plasma Cutters in hopes of slashing the opposing mech. But the smoke from the grenade explosion had delayed his response for a fraction of a second too long. As Riptide swings the energy blades in from either side, Orion stops both in their tracks by planting its knives against the prongs of the Plasma Cutter focusing arrays. As the two mechs struggle for dominance, Orion looks the slightly taller mech in the eye.
“I don’t know about you, but there was something else to that deja vu feeling I had. Like there was unfinished business between us.”
With that, Orion shoves its arms out to the sides slightly before pulling them back towards itself, giving it enough room to twist the knives around and thrust once again, this time stabbing them into Riptide’s forearms. The Imar mech then brings its foot up and uses it to shove Riptide away, keeping its grip on the knife in its right hand -ripping it out of Riptide’s arm- while letting go of the left and leaving it embedded. As Riptide stumbles to keep from falling over, Orion reaches over its shoulder with its free left hand, grabs its Plasma Rifle, sticks the end of it directly up against the hole in Riptide’s torso, and fires.
A shower of sparks erupts from the hole as the blast of plasma melts and fuses internal components. A power surge tears through Riptide’s innards, causing all manner of malfunctions and temporary shutdowns. The Plasma Cutters flicker and then shut off as the machine starts to fall over backwards. By some miracle Ben manages to fire off a wild shot of the Super NOVA as his mech topples, which sweeps diagonally across Orion’s chest and makes the Imar mech stumble back.
Riptide hits the ground limply, its internal safety mechanisms having temporarily shut down its most vital components to protect them from damage by the power surge. Meanwhile, Orion steps around to the side of the fallen mech and aims its Plasma Rifle at the hole once again and discharges the weapon. Another shower of sparks erupts from the “wound,” though this one is slightly smaller than the last. Kevin waits a moment, hoping to hear an announcement from the UCA to cease the match, but none comes. This isn’t like them. Both he and his opponent are barely functioning; it’s starting to get dangerous. Normally they don’t allow matches to reach this point. It’s almost as if they’re intentionally dragging this out for as long as possible... like they’re trying to get the two humans to nearly destroy each other and their machines... testing to see how far the two fighters will go before reaching their mental limit. Kevin narrows his eyes.
Bastards.
Kevin prepares to fire one last time into the hole, hoping that it would be enough to finally end this.

Ben's machine was a wreck, as smoke poured out of multiple holes in the superstructure. The Orion wasn't much better though. Ben could see the many gaps and holes in its once pristine armor. Even as the XDEW began to build up a another charge, Ben locked Riptide on to one gap in particular. This was going to end, one way or another. He gritted his teeth, knowing that the next few seconds were going to hurt.
The XDEW discharged its payload into the "wound", melting down more armor and circuitry. But in Kevin's desire to end this fight, he failed to pay attention to Riptide. Ben's mech discharged the Super NOVA into a hole near the Orion's head. The Imar mech siezes up for a moment as sparks erupt from the hole as its widened and shrapnel flies off in multiple directions, before toppling over backwards, still leaving the XDEW imbedded in Riptide's body.
"OK, now for the hard part," Ben muttered as he struggled to pull his machine to a standing position. He ignored the warnings being blared at him as Ritpide shook and staggered to a standing position. The Orion was likewise trying to rise, as Kevin seemed to have reestablished control. But it wouldn't matter much longer. Riptide lurched forward and grappled the Orion by the arms, keeping them pinned to the machine's sides to prevent Kevin from going after the monomolecular blades. The Ion Thrusters flickered to life as Riptide began to slowly rise from the ground, carrying its heavy payload with it.
"Divert all power to the boosters. I've got one shot at this."
"Affirmative. Now beginning power re-direct. Reactor power levels at 32% and falling."
"We don't need to keep airborne for long."
The two machines ascended slowly at first, but rapidly gain speed as Ben maintains his grip on the controls. It had recently occured to him that the Orion had not once shown any signs of possessing a mechanism for flight during their fight. Which likely meant that there would be no way for Kevin to recover from a fall. The other pilot was silent on his end of the radio. Ben could only hope that he wasn't unconscious, or worse. Finally, at nearly a mile up, Riptide lets go. The Orion plummets from the heavens, twisting and spinning as it falls, before finally crashing into the desert floor. Smoke and dust erupt in a massive plume as chunks of metal spray from the impact site. Riptide slowly descends before landing less than gracefully nearby as the smoke clears. When it finally does, Ben can see the Orion, splayed out and smoking, in the middle of the impact crater.
Amazingly though, the Orion begins to move, as Kevin struggles to make his machien stand once more. Ben grins to himself. He can respect that kind of tenacity. But unfortunately, in this world controlled by the UCA, there can be only one victor. Riptide fires the Super NOVA, this time sweeping the beam across the Orions legs. More armor is stripped away as wires and circuits spark from the exposed sections.
"Warning! Reactor power levels at 2%. Now brining auxillery batteries online."
Riptide visibly slumps as the last vestiges of power slip away, leaving the machine with little ability to fight back in the event that the Orion is still up and running.
"You still there, Kevin?"
"Yeah," the response comes back. Ben can tell his breathing is harsh and ragged, much like his own. "Yeah, I'm still here. You don't sound so good."
"Neither do you. I just wanted to say that...it was a pleasure getting to meet you like this. No matter what happens."

After a few tense moments of silence, the UCA announcer finally make himself know. "ATTENTION! THE MATCH HAS BEEN DECIDED! THE VICTORY GOES TO... ORION!" The booming voice suddenly takes on surprising cheer for a moment, obviously having enjoyed the fight. "Congratulation! NOW RETURN TO YOUR QUARTERS IMMEDIATELY!"
(Great fight, guys. Close call too. Riptide has quite the arsenal, but Orion's physical projectiles and monomolecular blades really shredded his armor. IR also used some pretty wicked tactics. Omegarex nearly tied things up with those last two attacks, which were really nasty, but I say, overall, IR dished out better damage. Again, awesome fight, was hard to call.)

Kevin grins inside Orion’s cockpit. Not so much because he won, but moreso because the battle is finally over. He slowly gets his machine to a standing position and steps out of the crater.
“That was a hell of a fight, Ben. Your people built a good machine, and they chose an even better pilot for it.”
“Thanks, same goes for you and yours.”
As the teleporter beams fall down from the sky behind them, Orion steps forward and extends its hand. Riptide returns the gesture, and the two battered machines shake hands.
“Although, I can’t say I’m surprised by the outcome. Orion doesn’t lose, you know. It’s not in his specs.”
Ben can’t help but chuckle a bit. “Yeah, sure.”
Orion begins to turn around, but stops.
“Oh, I’m gonna need my knife back.”
“Huh? Oh.”
Riptide pulls out the knife which Orion left embedded in its right forearm. With everything going on, Ben had completely forgotten it was there. He tosses it to Orion, who catches it and twirls it around in its fingers before putting the blade in its sheath. It then takes a few moments and goes about gathering the rest of its weapons scattered around the general area, not bothering to go more than a few steps towards any of them before slinging out a wrist wire to retrieve it. With all of its weapons now stored in their proper locations, the machine finally goes toward the teleporter beam. Without bothering to turn around, it gives a parting wave.
“Alright man, see ya later. We usually have lunch in the cafeteria in the L-3 block. Feel free to drop by and hang out.”
With those parting, cheerful words done, Kevin’s expression quickly shifts to a scowl. To say he’s displeased with the way the UCA handled this match would be an understatement. He’s been a very willing participant in this little game of the UCA’s ever since he got here months ago, and then they turn around and pull this shit on him?

Riptide staggers into the teleportation beacon and disappears in a blinding flash of light, leaving much of the machine's armor behind on the battlefield. When his vision returns, Ben finds himself back in the mech hanger. The Orion is already docked and being attended to, so there was no sign of Kevin. Ben sighed as he disengaged his seat straps before exiting the machine. Fundamentally, he knew that Riptide had been beaten and torn to shreds. The diagnostic reports told him as much. But he only got to see it for himself now that the fight was over. Gaping wounds marred the once pristine metal coating. The NXT frame had been shredded and pulverized. The TiTun plating had likewise taken a severe beating. He could see where several bullets had nearly breached the reactor sheilds and half of Riptide's face had been shredded. The Orion wasn't in much better shape.
As usual, an armed security detail waited, ready to take him back to his quarters. Ben was too tired to make his usual snide remarks and just walked in silence. He could see some of the other ongoing fights bing displayed as he passed by the giant monitors. He ignored them and took the opportunity to reflect on the fight. Both combatants had given it all they had, and while he wouldn never believe that the Orion was a superior machine, he had to admit it did better in a fight against Riptide.
Riptide had been built to handle a variety of opponents, but most of them had several things in common, those things generally being slow and possessing powerful energy weapons. Riptide was built to withstand those things, but didn't have as much dfense against oversized bullets and a super-agile opponent. Maybe it's time to rethink my strategy?
