Name: Styx
Height: Variable (typically ~70 meters in battle)
Mass: 1000 tons
Description:
In the history of the world it comes from, no one monster has altered human development as much as the spectral creature known as Styx. Depictions of the creature have existed amongst societies since the beginning of known history, the earliest of which show the exact same being despite being isolated for centuries, often as a guide to the spirit realm-du-jour. The creature is drawn to some sort of emanation that comes from lifeforms at the moment of their death, feeding its strange powers. For this reason, medicine has advanced in leaps in bounds in order to prevent Styx from being drawn to hospitals. Weapons of war, which are frequently lost in battle with other monsters, have become increasingly automated to diminish the likelihood of large battles attracted Styx's attention. Even commercial interests such as slaughterhouses and farm factories are under careful observation for this reason. If the ghost with the most were simply attracted to death or fed on it, it would likely be less infamous. However, if the amount of death does not satisfy Styx's hunger, it will lash out on its surroundings, creating more and more death until it has had its fill. Also, Styx's appetite is usually not picky about what death it eats; the death of an insect is as nourishing as a human or an elephant. Only giant monsters are considered more appetizing. While a powerful creature, Styx has been defeated in the past. However, for every time it is destroyed, it reappears soon after, hungrier than before.
Styx has an unusual biology. Unlike what many people consider a true ghost, Styx has a physical form made up of ectoplasm, generating more of the strange substance as it feeds, rendering it somewhat-vulnerable to physical attacks. It cannot feel pain, though with each blow, more ectoplasm - and thus more of its power - is lost.
Personality: Like any gourmet, Styx enjoys savoring its meals, often seeking to cause as much damage as possible to unleash as savory a flavor as possible. It is aggressive almost to a fault, only stopping an attack if it spends more energy fighting than it has eaten.
Attacks:
- Dark Matter: a misnomer, this attack is a blob of dark, sticky fluid that gives off a strong electrical discharge
- Miasma: a cloud of choking fumes that thickens in the target's lungs
- Psychic Binding: Styx has a passive mental field that gives it the strength and durability of a more solid creature
- Dark Matter Bomb: using its psychic powers, Styx can hurl blobs of Dark Matter with enough force that they explode on contact
- Grief Wave: a powerful blast utilizing the emotional energy from the terror and regret of Styx's victims that also enhances those feelings in the target (limited)
Powers:
- Hovering: Styx's primary form of motion, more akin to a helicopter's movements
- Plane Shifting: after feeding, Styx will disappear as if into thin air. Scientific readings suggest it travels to another dimension until it is ready for another meal.
Weaknesses:
- Energy Vulnerability: Energy attacks, particularly sustained electrical blasts, are additionally effective at dispelling the energy in Styx's body
- Low Mass: although its psychic powers increase its strength and resilience, Styx's low mass makes it vulnerable to exceptionally-powerful winds
- Insufficient Size: as he loses mass, Styx's powers will weaken until he lacks the strength to remain on a physical plane and "passes out" into its resting dimension
-Electricity: Sustained electrical attacks can weaken Styx's control over his body and immobilize him until the attack ends.
